Safety

Adopt a Public Health Approach to Safety is my goal take with me the 3L's: Listen Learn, Lead.

Shift from solely punitive measures to strategies that address root causes of violence, such as poverty, trauma, and lack of opportunity.

Create or strengthen civilian-led offices dedicated to violence prevention. These offices can coordinate efforts across public health, housing, and law enforcement sectors. Richmond, California, has seen a 62% decline in homicides and a 79% decrease in firearm assaults since establishing its Office of Neighborhood Safety .

Foster Community-Police Collaboration is very important.

Enhance trust between law enforcement and residents through initiatives like community policing, town halls, and joint problem-solving sessions. In Ludhiana, India, the police commissionerate conducted a public engagement initiative titled “Walk a Talk” to enhance citizen safety and security .

Support projects that improve the built environment, such as better lighting, cleanups, and the creation of public spaces. In Philadelphia, transforming and cleaning vacant lots in high-poverty neighborhoods led to a 29% reduction in violent crimes.

Promote Youth Engagement and Mentorship

Invest in programs that provide mentorship, employment, and recreational activities for youth. Such initiatives can reduce involvement in violent crime by as much as 45% .search organizations that I know of that are working in the schools directly so many to mention, I will be working directly with various organizations while implementing a data driven decision-making tools.

Utilize both quantitative and qualitative data to inform safety strategies. The Newark Public Safety Collaborative’s Data-Informed Community Engagement (DICE) model involves community organizations and residents in designing violence prevention strategies .

Supporting businesses

Support eco-friendly businesses: Many local establishments prioritize sustainability by sourcing locally, reducing waste, and minimizing transportation emissions.mini of King County businesses practice this. I will create a Small Business Liaison or Navi gator .

My plans is established a dedicated office or position to assist local entrepreneurs with navigating city regulations, obtaining permits, and accessing resources. For instance, Montgomery County, MD, and Minneapolis have implemented Small Business Navigator offices to streamline these processes. This approach helps reduce bureaucratic hurdles and fosters a more business-friendly environment.

Implement Business-Friendly Zoning and Development Policies such as .

Revise zoning laws to support mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented districts that accommodate a variety of business types. Encourage the adaptive reuse of vacant or underutilized properties to house new businesses, as seen in Phoenix’s Adaptive Reuse Program. Additionally, consider requiring new developments to allocate a portion of commercial space for local businesses.

incentives to local startups and small businesses. Establish a revolving loan fund to support entrepreneurs, particularly those from underserved communities.

Promote “Buy Local” Campaigns is very important to the community because so many local businesses give to our schools and our places of worship.

Launch campaigns to educate residents about the economic benefits of supporting local businesses. Utilize social media, local events, and partnerships with community organizations to raise awareness and encourage local spending.

Collaborate with educational institutions and industry experts to offer workshops, seminars, and mentorship programs. These initiatives can provide local entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed and grow their business.

I am aware of the safety, and the issues of business owners have to go through.

Ensuring the safety of local businesses is essential for fostering a thriving economy and a vibrant community. As a King County Executive , I can implement a range of strategies to enhance safety and support local enterprise.

Strength Community Police Partnerships

Establishing strong relationships between law enforcement and local businesses can significantly improve safety. Consider initiatives such as:. Community Safety Officers: Deploy officers to patrol business districts, engage with business owners, and address concerns proactively. For instance, Townsville City Council expanded foot patrols.

Direct Communication Channels: Facilitate real-time communication between businesses and police through platforms like WhatsApp groups, enabling swift reporting and response to incidents .
